#4 - ischemia

we're learning about the heart and heart failure today. ischemia is not good but so fun to say, that and infarction. the heart is so complex and pretty amazing. the fact that it just beats for that many years, sometimes over 100 years! then in some people it just stops. science and the body is just so amazing.

I just went to this exhibit at OMSI called body worlds 3. I went earlier in the summer and it was pretty awesome, just as awesome second time around. basically it is people who have donated their bodies to be learning materials. usually when a person or organism dies it decomposes. this guy figured out a way to stop the decomposition then replace cells with plastic and it's called plastination. so these people are presented in a very artistic way for a great learning experience. there are also samples of all body parts also plasticized and different views for optimum viewing experience.

anyways it was a great exhibit and I would definitely recommend it to anyone so if it's in your city, go see it!! it's well worth the $20. body worlds website

INFARCT! that word got me through grad school, haha. yeah, even though anat & physiology was one of the hardest classes (the most to memorize, anyway) i really liked it because 1) the names of parts are fun to say, and 2) you can relate personally to everything you learn because we've all go the same parts (pretty much). the circulatory system especially is pretty cool, although, we only dealt with circulation to the brain in strokes and not anything else in the body, but i liked it. i've heard of that body worlds exhibit too, but i don't know if i could stand to be in a room with all those bodies... even if they are all plastinated or whatever, creepy... maybe if i went on halloween...
